100 MPG Toyota Prius Plug-In : Exclusive Interview
The Auto Channel’s ROAD TRIP talks with Pacific Gas & Electric’s Judy Ho about its electric concept car. For more info about alternative fuel vehicles and all cars visit TheAutoChannel.com. … hybrid plug-in electric Toyota Prius alternative energy

Well what if I wanted to install a subwoofer or a sound system, which would drain the battery like crazy!!!! or use the A/C (which runs on the battery pack in the Prius) Or what if I lived somewhere where i got “dirty energy” (ie. from coal) and I couldn’t afford solar panels, like most middle class North Americans? That would offset the whole point of the electric car. She didn’t answer these questions. And I hate the fact that she drove like a retarded geriatric, going 20km/h on a main road
this man is an idiot
dogpoo: gas ice are 35+% efficient. diesels are just over 40% – mainly because of the turbo. hcci will offer diesel-like efficiency. complicated transmissions eat ~15% power. so about 33% power to the ground at best.
electric motors can be up to 97% efficient (honda ima eg.) a single gear transmission loses around 5%. the inverter is 96%. so it transmits 85+% power to the GROUND.
who drives with the sub blasting like a retard?! normal listening level – 90 dB -uses 1 W!
really…
ashkanlion23.dirty energy? There are always by-products of any chemical and mechanical processes. You are indoctrinated by politicians and mad scientists. Coal is just another form of fuel, same as oil, etc.. burning coal to run boilers which produces steam to run turbines and produce electricity, burning coal produces CO2 + water vapor +ash. Sulfur dioxide from coal is removed by reacting with lime.CO2 is not a pollutant as what nutheads like Obama,Gore and McCain led you to believe.
mr2ya, ethanol is ethyl alcohol C2H5OH (2 carbons) while Gasoline is a multi chain hydrocarbon (hydrogen and Carbon)–and that’s why gasoline has more power than alcohol. Making alcohol is by distillation which also uses electricity and boilers used for distillation and make high yield alcohol. It costs more to produce alcohol. You get it?
Burning coal is not as efficient as hydro-dams, wind turbines, and obtaining solar, tidal, and geothermal energy. That is why I call it dirty energy. Because it pollutes, unlike the other methods of obtaining energy that I mentioned above (notice I did not mention nuclear because it pollutes too). None of those energy production systems have any by-products. It’s clean. And for the record, Obama, Gore, and McCain are all nuts; I am not indoctrinated by any American politician.
When “Joe blow” makes its expensive, when government makes it its not.
And Gas makes more power per bang, But not in total, Ethanol can be ran at far higher boost levels, and far more timing than regular gas, Making MUCH more power than gas in the long run, Get it.
Im a car tuner, i Should know.
Oh and thanks for explaining How alcohol is made even though i stated its for the most part moonshine, meaning i know how its made.
I cant wait for Ethanol to be mainstream.
Its awesome!
Everyone owns electric gadgets nowdays, so that was a horrible rebutal and point.
And we dont care about the power efficiency of a electric motor, its not fun, its not cool, most dont want it if it were, And most of all it Doesn’t work in the real world, not to mention where is this money coming from to buy these things anyway and why cant i just convert my car to run ethanol, save money, still save planet, still have normal looking car.
Incase somehow my point was missed, the DVD player was very expensive when it came out, like 2-3 and even $400, now you can buy for $29 at walgreens or the corner store.
Ethanol may be around 5-6 and $7 dollars a gallon today, but next year or the year after that it will be 1-$2 a gallon, mass production is a motherfucker.
Im very happy that Ethanol is coming, its a great resource.
i know that we need relief at the gas pump. but do all of you think its a good idea to use a food source for fuel? im just curious… i think that in ten years the population in the world will dramaticly increase and food will be tougher to find.
If you really want to get great gas mileage go to: thegas4free.blogspot,com
what about hydrogen ? I’ve seen some cars with hydrogen fuel cell technology
do you HAVE to plug in the prius?
Rastavio,
This one, yes.
the back of the Prius just looks sooooooo ugly.
There are some prototypes out there including the honda clarity. However, electric is a more realistic alternative. Its easier to plug in a car at night than retool all gas stations. If we go all electric, then all we need are clean power plants.
The lady in the back makes a good point. Sure electric cars don’t pollute, but what about the green house gases emitted by the power plants that supply the electricity? Well I guess it makes it easier. Rather than switching to a different fuel for cars, and switching to a clean energy grid. All we have to do is get rid of coal power plants.
On a side note, don’t believe anyone who says clean coal is the way to go. All it is is hiding the CO2 underground, not finding a way to burn it cleanly.
good info but boring
Hydrogen is a storage medium, not a fuel source. That is why hydrogen as an idea is gone. Realize that electric drive-trains are by design 8X as efficient as gas cars. A good amount of a gas engine’s hardware is there to get rid of the gas that is turned directly into waste heat. If the radiator wasn’t there, the engine would melt into a block in 6 minutes. This is just bad engineering. Just like the horse, the gas car is going away. Hold onto the past and you become part of it.
I bet that is the slowest that dude has ever talked to a Ho!
fck people who hate green product, they have nothing to comment beside looking at the detail and say it ugly, why not looking at 100MPG and compare which your 30mpg or less to see how much work and engineer skills put on that.
i will always drive my truck on diesel until i die
The Volt soon 230 MPG thank goodness
Way to go American.#1
With phev’s, the power production is centralized and therefore more controllable.
